Timeline of chairs

As part of my research I made a visual and written timeline of chairs. This aided me in being able to think of some initial concept designs, which would later influence my final designs. The timeline begins in Neolithic Europe and travels through to the Ancient Egyptian, then towards the industrial revolution, finally ending towards the present day. This timeline looks at some of the most influential and inspirational chairs our history has known. This timeline represents how human technology improved massively throughout time and how techniques were adapted and changed, producing higher quality chairs.

Speaking to an expert

Alex law - upholsterer

By speaking to Alex, I gained a greater insight into the world of upholstery and I developed a better understanding of how there has been a shift in material choices due to trends and culture. Furthermore our understanding of ergonomics grew, this led to more curved backs being seen on chairs.

During my time with Alex I ended up making a stool, when doing this I learnt the key skills needed in upholstery as well as how the use materials in upholstery have changed over time. This really helped me understand how chairs do take a very long time to be made as the upholstery process alone would take around a week, if you worked on it everyday (depending on the size of the chair).
